Measuring the volume of feed on a dairy farm

Many web based tools for measuring feed on a dairy farm have limitations in how accurately you can measure each pile, bunk, or bag. They won’t accurately account for ground slope, obstructions, or unique storage conditions.

For our Enterprise customers, we have developed custom measurement tools that allow us to eliminate the impact of these typical measurement limitations. Further, each farm uploaded by an Enterprise customer is measured and reviewed by a specialist to ensure that the measurements have been correctly made.

Drive Over Piles

To measure a drive over pile, creating a surface with multiple clicks on the ground around the pile. If the ground significantly slopes around the pile, make sure you’re making enough clicks around the pile to compensate for the change in slope.

Sometimes there can be challenges with measuring these piles:

  • Unusual ground sloping beneath the pile
  • Two or more piles conjoined or overlapping

Sign up for Enterprise and we can measure these piles for you – making sure all measurement challenges are mitigated.

Ag Bags

To measure ag bags, there are two options:

  1. You can click the ground around the bag and measure the volume.
  2. You can precisely measure the length and apply a cubic foot per unit of length.

Sometimes there can be challenges with measure ag bags:

  • The bags are too close together to accurately mark the ground.
  • Grass or dirt may not allow you to accurately mark the ground.

Bunker Silos

To measure Bunkers, click around the edges of the feed in the bunker, and then adjust the elevation of surface so that it is under the feed.

Bunkers are the most difficult to measure. Usually there is a slope underneath that is difficult to measure accurately.

Sign up for Enterprise and we can measure these bags for you – making sure that the slope underneath the feed is accurately accounted for.

Trench Silos

To measure a Trench Silo, only click on the ground at each end of the feed. This will allow the surface to approximate the slope of the ground underneath the feed.

Sometimes there can be challenges with measuring Trench Silos:

  • Unusual ground sloping beneath the feed
  • Curved or sloped walls, not allowing for a straight edge of the surface
  • Two or more piles conjoined or overlapping

Sign up for Enterprise and we can measure these Trench Silos for you – making sure all measurement challenges are mitigated.

Commodity Bays

Commodity bays require the use of our mobile app – contact us to learn more.

Hay Bales

Hay bale volume can be measured like a typical feed pile to measure overall volume. Alternatively, you can manually count and label each haybale.

Sign up for Enterprise and we can measure these Hay Bales for you – making sure all measurement challenges are mitigated.
